Kalippus, Friendly Neighbors and The Fire Brigade!!!!
Kalippu: Problem/Disaster/Catastrophe/Issue
You would not believe it guys, but I had another great experience here in SF this weekend thanks to the legendary Mr. HPU.
I very strongly now believe in the 80 -20 rule. 20 percent of the people have 80 percent of the bad luck and Mr. HPU, would probably top that “20 percent” group with his long list of escapades. Well, this Saturday, he got to add another remarkable story to that long list he has.
As is customary, I reached Mr. HPU’s and Mr. AT’s house at around 4, this Saturday evening and it was the perfect settings for an uneventful Saturday evening. We had no plans for the day, absolutely nothing and with almost zero chance of “kalippu” and that made me careless.
It gave me a sense of security but I should have been more careful to watch out for the signs, especially since Mr. HPU was around but I failed to do so.
After some time, Mr. HPU was hungry (as usual) and wanted to go to KFC to buy his usual 8 piece chicken bucket and so, all three of us were just absent from the house for about 5 minutes. When we were leaving, Mr. HPU had placed his (half finished) cigarette in the ash tray in the balcony.
When we got back in 5 minutes, the first thing that we noticed was that a lot of people were standing outside, near our apartment and when we got closer, we also noticed that they were all looking at our balcony and pointing to something.
We parked the car, and got out when, one guy came running up to us.
Friendly neighbor (FN): “Is that your house?” he said excitedly pointing to our flat.
We said yes, and that was when he said, “You guy have a fire in your house. Go fast fast fast!!!!!!!!!!”
On hearing this, all three of us ran as fast as we could into the house. We could smell the fire but we could not spot the source. On closer inspection, we found out that the (small) fire was in the balcony thanks to Mr. HPU’s cigarette.
The chocolate box that Mr. HPU had kept on the balcony near the ashtray was charred beyond recognition and it just took us a bottle of water to kill the flames. All the people cheered on as we killed the flames.
As Mr. HPU and Mr. AT were busy cleaning the balcony, I strolled down to the parking lot to lock the car and that was when the fun started.
One guy came up to me and said, “Thank God you guys are back. That flame was like a feet tall”.
Another middle aged, Indian lady came up to me and said, “All of us could smell the smoke and that is why we all are here. That flame was like 3 feet tall”.
The more neighbors I met, the higher the flames got and finally I also managed to meet FN, the friendly neighbor.
“You guys should have been more careful” was what he said.
I said, “Yeah, it was due to a cigarette but we put it out, so no issues. Things are under control”.
That was when I noticed a subtle glint in his eyes. He said, “You know what. Since the flames were about 8 feet tall and you guys were not around, I had to call 911 you know. The fire brigade will be here any second”.
Just when he said that, I could hear the faint drone of the sirens.
FN very quickly added, “Yeah, they will be here in like 3 minutes. If you have any drugs or illegal guns in the house, please clear it up”.
Suppressing a laugh, I assured him that we had no such thing slashed up and I ran back into the house after locking the car to tell the others about how, we were going to be graced by the eminent presence of the illustrious Freemont Fire Brigade.
And they were there in about 2 minutes and they had come in full force; a big fire engine, an ambulance and the police squad.
They came into the house, and we told them that we had things under control.
“Where is the fire” asked the fire fighter.
We showed him the way to the balcony.
“Where is the fire???” he repeated indignantly.
We actually had to point to the small corner where the fire was.
“But but…..err, we got a call that the whole balcony was on fire” he said half disappointedly. Maybe he was just having another boring day at work. We assured him that no such thing had happened.
The police officers asked us if we are all right and when we assured them that we were doing great, all of them finally left. They were all very decent and polite.
Mr. HPU and Mr. AT became instant celebrities in their housing complex and Mr. HPU lives on; a legend in the truest form.

u guys are unbelievable.. u can not spend one weeke without an incident worth blogging… but ur neighbours seem like made for you… what an exaggeration..
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!! LOL we are what we are 😉
the people on the upper floor (if u don’t live on the top floor) than yours could have saved all the tragedy just by sprinkling water with their plant-water can.. 🙂 lol… 😀 😀
OG: aaha 😛 but that was also not possible………. coz the balcony is preety big and cannot be reached from the top
If u guys had been back a few minutes later, the flames would have been 50 ft. high!
OG: hehehehehehehehee
On a serious note, please ask your friend to be more careful…
OG: yup, I will
8 ft high in minutes 🙂 And the whole balcony was on fire too 🙂 You guys live such adventurous lives 🙂
OG: hehehehehehehe 😛
But, these people have such extra sensitive equipment too! The other day, my smoke alarm went off when I was toasting bread! And I had to scamper around to find a wet towel to smother it, before my neighbours called 999 🙂
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!! yes that happens here as well………….
Your Mr HPU is certainly jinxed 🙂
OMG !!!! This Mr HPU is certainly a guy to watch out for !!!! Take this as a lesson and never leave him alone or better all of you stay away from him.
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!! he lives his life in style 😛
BTW, how did all the ppl watching the fire, came to different conclusions – a feet tall, 3 feet tall and finally 8 feet tall !! 🙄 Highly imaginative ppl, I guess !!!!
OG: agreeeeeeee 😛
And the fire brigade – they were disappointed that the fire was under control – OMG !!! 😆 😆 😆
What an eventful life, you lead, OG !!!
OG: I try to lead a simple life 😉
Shall we trade the fun?:)
OG: you can take this kind of fun……… I dont want it 😛
Superb narration. Trademark OG:)
Mr.HPU:P:P Reminds me of the name:P:P
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting to see the fire grow from 1 to 3 to 8 whole feet high! 🙂
OG: yeah 😛 😛 😛

I think we should change the 80-20 adage to 99-01!
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!! 😛 😛 😛 😛 yeah, maybe in the future 😛
height of fire gets increased with each passing neighbour.. LOL 😆
OG: heheheheheheheheheh 😛
Ha..ha..ha..ha.. this is a place where a mole gets tested for cancer and actual cancer goes undetected.
OG: ROFL!!!!!! hehehehehehehehehehe
I think I mentioned it long back on your space that my first attempt with chapati triggered our smoke alarm.
OG: yup, you have told me about it 😛 😛
BTW jokes aside, be careful though. You know the material used to build apartments here, it catches fire quickly.
OG: I know………………. everything is so…soo…… made out of wood……………. 😛
OMG, what an adventure!! 🙂 Never a dull moment with HPU around isnt it? 😀
OG: hehehehehehe 😛 yup, agree 😛

Since I knew part of this incident from before, the grin on my face was already set in place by the time i started reading it 😀 😀
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!
the fire alarm thingie reminds me of my London days…. i used to stay in the campus hostel and all the undergrads used to have a field day by chkng if the alarm actually works…. by showing a cigarette butt regularly beneath it
it was such pain 🙄
OG: OMG!!!!!!! they had nothing better to do?????
i remember the first time we heard the alarm, we all ran out…. atleast i was dressed… some ppl were in mickey mouse pajamas n all 😆
after that we became so used to hearing the fire alarms at 3am that we used to roll over and just sleep… 😛 😛
OG: hehehehehehehehehehe 😛
LOL!!! 8 foot flame in one minute??? a fire brigade that is disappointed there is no fire???? in ur own words, classic!!! these are the parts of any incident that make them different rite??? 😀 😀 😀
OG: thanku Thanku!!!!!!! agreeeeeeee
8 feet high flames! How considerate of the neighbors to call the fire brigade. Gee! You probably need to be more careful…of the neighbors rather than the accidents 😛
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😛 hehehehehehe
Kallipu! 😀 😀 😀 how I love this word!!! 😛 😛
Mr HPU is in the 20% ppl… pliss…count crafty too… she makes up that population! 🙄
*somebody save me*
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know you love this word 😛 😛 😛 and you in that 20 % group…….err okay 😛
Zero chance of kalippu! Aiyo aliyaaaa!!!! The lower the visible chances of Kalippu, the higher the chance is sure to happen! 😦 everytime all seems normal and drab… the storm is on its way I say!! 😛 😛
OG: the lull before the storm 😛
AHA! KFC!!! 😀 I had eaten KFC as a kid, when we were in Mauritius! And I had loved it (acc to mom) and the outlet in Mumbai opened a year after I gave up non-veg!!! 😛 😛

CHOCOLATE BOX??? Pliss tell me it was empty??!!! Were some chocolates harmed in this kalippu??
*crafty awaits answer restlessly, ready to mourn if news is bad*
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!! it was empty 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛
WOW! So firangs are quite imaginative eh?? The transition from 1 feet to 8 feet flames progresses faster than fire itself wud have 😆 😆 EOG? Did u manage to keep a straight face when they kept talking of this humongous fire 🙄 that u guys doused out with a bottle of water?? 😛 😛
OG: hehehehehehehe, had to keep a straight face 😛
did u maintained a grave heroic and stoic face, in fact maybe even brag of how one of ur friend passed out due to smoke clogging his lungs?? *expectations of a drama queen *
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nope, I did not have to do the exaggerating part 😛
Yeah, they will be here in like 3 minutes. If you have any drugs or illegal guns in the house, please clear it up
Why??? Wud they do a check of a house up in flames??? Wud they? 😛 and what with an 8 foot flame… most things wud be destroyed beyond recognition 😆
OG: hehehehehehehehhehe 😛
Maybe he was just having another boring day at work.
ROFL!!!!! Hahah! Can I join the Freemont Fire Brigade?? I SO WANNA have a “boring” day at work! 😆
OG: nope, 😛 I want other people to live as well 😛
Mr. HPU and Mr. AT became instant celebrities in their housing complex and Mr. HPU lives on; a legend in the truest form.
