Dandiya Fever in SF!

September 26, 2009

Last Saturday, I managed to go for dandiya/garba for the first time in my life here in SF and it was an eventful evening (as usual πŸ˜› ).

It was my roomie Mr. DP, a gujju who sold us the idea of going for dandiya. Initially, I was not that keen on going for dandiya coz it would again mean a few hours of just standing there, doing nothing (as my past party experiences have been).

But Mr. DP’s logic was unbreakable.

β€œWhat is the problem if it is just three of us? We can blend inconspicuously into the crowd and dance with the others”, he said with authority and I could not find any holes in that theory.

But the tipping factor in going for dandiya was the fact that Mr. DP also mentioned that there would be a lot of beautiful girls around and so, without taxing my brain any further, I said β€œYES” and coughed up that 13 dollars for the ticket.

And so the dandiya party consisted of Mr. DP, Mr. KG and me and we reached the β€œSF convention center” where the party was organized at around 10 PM.

On entering the hall, I was momentarily blinded by the light that reflected from almost all the dresses there. On closer inspection, most of the beautiful women had come dressed with β€œsomething like mirrors” fitted on their dresses. Why would one do that???

And the men had come dressed in kurtas and other forms of traditional wear (again fitted with mirrors).

Β The little voice in my head told me that β€œthe blending part” into the crowd would be a problem; I realized that we were conspicuously dressed in jeans and tees like a few other losers who were also standing in the sidelines like us.

β€œLet us dance” Mr. DP said with enthusiasm in his eyes and that was when the fun started.

As Mr. DP was about to take that first step,

β€œBut we need those sticks right???” quipped Mr. KG from the side.

Β If there is anyone who can completely destroy the mood of the moment, it is Mr. KG. But he definitely had a point there and so we paid a handsome sum of 15 dollars for 3 pairs of dandiya sticks.

We then moved to the middle of the room where the action was.

β€œNow, let us go over a few basic steps” said Mr. DP. The poor man was in a hurry to get dancing.

In about 3 minutes flat; I had mastered the basic step for dandiya (as I am a seasoned dancer πŸ˜› ) and then it was Mr. KG’s turn and it was a sight to behold.

Normally, you would expect a novice to study the leg movements first, and then follow that up by studying the hand movements and then do both together. Also normally, you would expect a man to have a basic sense of rhythm in his body.

As I realized that day, Mr. KG was made slightly differently.

If he managed to plant his legs in the right position, his dandiya wielding arm would be in the opposite direction nearly endangering Mr. DP’s life and if he did manage to get his arm in the correct position, his legwork would be totally off and he would manage to get himself in a totally awkward position with his legs tied up in an ungainly position. It would then take him about 30 seconds and a sheepish grin to extricate himself from the β€œposture”.

After about 10 minutes, Mr. DP gave up this futile exercise of teaching Mr. KG saying that he could not risk any bodily injury and so we got ready to start dancing.

And so, we joined a nearby group who were kind enough to give us space in the large circle and then we danced for about 15 minutes.

The gujju-ness of Mr. DP came out in full force and he really enjoyed himself. Mr. KG was in his elements. Every single person in the group gave him a wide berth for dancing as no one wanted to end up injured but Mr. KG hardly seemed to notice. He went about dancing in his awkward style, hardly ever following a beat but he also enjoyed himself. I tell you guys; Mr. KG should have won the award for the most creative dancer there. He came up with steps that not even Prabhu deva would have thought about and the ordinary dandiya in his hands turned into deadly nunchuks.

new_dandiya

(Last seen photo of the dandiya before it dissapeared into something commonly known to the humans as “dustbin”)

And so after that 15 minutes, where we were asked to sit down and stand up multiple times, I got tired of the whole thing and so, I went out and called all my friends in India. It just did not have that β€œedge” that dappankuthu/pandi dance has.

I first called up my dear friend Mr. VR, a classic sarcastic mallu who is in Hyderabad (need to a post on him). After we completed the basic formality of cursing one another, I mentioned to him that I was in a dandiya party and that I was outside.

He was amazed and in his classic style said (in mallu), β€œDai, you paid 5 dollars for those sticks. It is a pity that you are not in India. Here atleast, you could have used that as (veragu) fuel for cooking”.

That pretty much summed up my evening there. And we followed that up by another round of cursing.

Mr. DP and Mr. KG got tired of dancing at around 1 in the night and then we got back home. On the way back, Mr. KG was all fired up and wanted Mr. DP to teach him more complex steps of garba and dandiya.

Mr. DP looked at me and just had one thing to say, β€œGod Forbid”

Overall, it was a great first experience of dandiya that I had………. Β Next time, I need to go with a bigger crowd.

PS: Listen to the greatest ARR song EVER!

    OG: hehehehehehehehehhe πŸ˜›
I wish I could dance -I have 2 left feet when it comes to dancing – so I watch other people dancing and then, Poohi and I dance at home πŸ™‚

    Another eventful evening! πŸ™‚

Have never been able to understand this fascination with dandiya…..every fifth building in Mumbai has its own Dandiya celebrations, apart from the bigger, professionally organised events.

OG, I am really disappointed. You are losing your touch. At least in this post, I thought there would be chart/diagram detailing the pattern of KG’s steps!

    Cheers,

    QI
    OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!1 next time dude πŸ˜› πŸ˜›
