Desi on the Dias

As we sat in our seats in the movie hall, waiting for the film to start; an extremely handsome, broad shouldered, tall dude walked onto the small elevated platform near the cinema screen, followed by three people! The face looked familiar but it took me a couple of seconds to place it.

“We have with us in the theatre hall, actor Ganesh Venkatraman; the guy who has worked with legends like Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal and Ajith! He is here in the bay area for shooting his film called Panithuli” the announcer exclaimed, all excited!

The suave dude (standing near the screen) raised his hand and it was followed by a loud cheer!

“And we also with Venkat, the director of that film,” the announcer exclaimed pointing to the second guy on the stage.

The dude also raised his hand and it was also followed by a loud cheer!

“And lastly, we have Mr. XX, the owner of – Travels,” the announcer exclaimed pointing to the third guy on the stage.

The man raised his hand and what followed was “pin drop” silence!

The man looked like a train had hit him, and then as soon as realization struck him that he was not going to get the “expected” applause, he beat a hasty retreat!

What is it with us desi people and getting onto the stage for totally unrelated things?

Events were witnessed at the first day show of the new Kamal film “Manmadhan Ambu” in this theatre.
