Decisions Decisions!

August 27, 2010

It was hot summer night in Chennai and the battalion of mosquitoes was also out in full force.

Damn, I don’t think I can sleep tonight because of this heat and the damn mosquitoes”, said Joseph; “Jesus, the mosquitoes here in Chennai are worse than the ones we see in Kerala”.

Well, it must be the effect of Kaveri water issue. They are not getting enough water to breed in,” observed Vinay.

Shut up dude; they don’t ‘bite’ as bad as your jokes,” retorted Joseph.

As they sat there on the balcony at 1 AM, hoping to get some respite from the heat, Vinay said, “Another weekend looms ahead of us; and we are going to waste it, just like the rest”.

It was the curse of most of the IT professionals in this big town; especially the ones from out of state. And this was also a ritual that they went through every Friday night; i.e. planning for the weekend ahead.

We need to do something this weekend dude. I’m bored of wasting it by just sleeping,” said Joseph; “Why don’t we see a couple of movies tomorrow?

No good films in town”, replied Vinay.

Ok, in that case, I heard that there is a book fair in Nungambakkam”, said Joseph.

Book Fairs suck!!! It is only for people who think that it is fashionable to buy books and neatly stack them in a book shelf,” replied Vinay.

Ok, in that case, why don’t we head out to Kovalam on ECR and enjoy a few water sports?” asked Joseph.

Those suck as well!!!! The safety precautions there are next to nil. I’d rather drown in the Arabian Sea than in the Bay of Bengal,” replied Vinay.

Ok, then how about ‘pool’ the whole day at Shastri Nagar Sharks?” asked Joseph.

No ways dude!!! We have been doing that for so many days now,” replied Vinay; “I fear that I’d become an expert at it if I play it anymore! There ought to be some mediocrity left in this world.

How about catching a play then?” asked Joseph

Stage plays are boring! If there is anything worse than a stage play, it is a stage play in English,” replied Vinay.

Football tomorrow morning at the Besant Nagar beach?” asked Joseph, more out of hope that anything else.

I most definitely will not get up early in the morning,” replied an exasperated Vinay.

Then, maybe in the evening then?” asked Joseph.

Nope, it will be hot,” replied Vinay.

Joseph said, “Well, in that case, why don’t you suggest something”; and maintained a dignified silence.

And thus, they sat there on the balcony for sometime, watching the dogs below. The transformation in a street dog’s character was something that puzzled Joseph and Vinay for days now. During the day, one could hardly spot them; and even if they could, the dogs would slink away trying its best to remain inconspicuous. But at night, the dogs would be out in full force; almost like they ruled the “world”. Almost every night, one gang would proclaim war on the other and this would continue till they had secured their “area”.

Joseph said, “Seriously, these dogs are still living in the Dark Ages, I tell you. Democra-

At that moment, he was interrupted by Vinay, “Aliya, I have an awesome idea!!!”

Ok, let me hear it,” said Joseph.

Why don’t we just drive out to Pondicherry?” replied Vinay.

When? Tomorrow morning?” asked Joseph.

Now; right this minute,” replied Vinay with a smile.

Joseph said, “You are a crazy man! At this hour and moreover, Anoop and Sree are sleeping.

Vinay said, “Listen up dude! What is life is there is no spontaneity left in the world? We will wake them up and leave right now. Good decisions like this should never be postponed or even contemplated about.”

And so in 10 minutes flat, they were ready. Anoop and Sree, did not even stand a chance to voice their protest on being woken up rudely in the middle of the night!

The drive through the ECR highway was exhilarating and cop-free. Guided by the moon light, the powerful beasts, a Bajaj Pulsar 180 and a Honda Unicorn, reached speeds in excess of 100 km/hr. Thankfully for them, the ECR was one of the few roads in India, where they could take such liberties. The sea on one side and vast empty tracts of land on the other, the view was truly magnificent as they rode on; with only the rhythmic beats of the ICE for company.

Finally by 4 AM, they reached Pondicherry and made their way to the beach.

As they sat there by the sea-shore, Joseph asked, “Ok, we are here now. So what do we do now?

I have no idea,” replied Vinay.

What does that mean? This trip was your idea!” exclaimed Joseph.

Technically speaking, my idea was that we travel to Pondicherry; nothing after that,” replied Vinay quickly.

For God’s sake, suggest something dude,” asked Joseph once again.

The way I see it; we will check into some decent hotel once it is dawn and then sleep. I need my 10 hours sleep,” replied Vinay.

Dude, we could have done the same thing in Chennai as well. What the hell are we doing here then?” asked Joseph with his hands on his head.

That is an interesting question Joseph. Spiritually speaking, we are 4 souls who are on journey, hoping that we can collect some good Karma along the way and Pondicherry is but a mere stop in that journey. Atheistically speaking, we are 4 blokes who are here for no what-so-ever reason other than evolution. Demographically speaking, we are 4 mallus who are here because we had nothing better to do this weekend. Politically speaking, we are here only because there are no goddamn jobs in our state!” replied Vinay with a smile.

Joseph was a man of peace but this one instance, he lost it! As he was about to physically assault Vinay, he was interrupted by a defiant snore. When they both turned back, they could see Sree and Anoop sleeping peacefully…………..

The next day morning, we left in two bikes (we borrowed a bike from my classmate) and after reaching there, we had no clue what to do. We sat in a stupid park, had some local ice creams which had made in palakkad (of all the places) and went back to chennai that evening itself !! oru maadiri patti pooram kaaanan poya poley !!! 😀 😀
