We are doing a kar!

August 11, 2010

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to own a car. Well, it has finally happened.

I bought myself my first car last month; a brand new car!

Well, let me make that clear; I bought myself a brand new “fourth hand” car which has already put 1,30,000 miles of carbon footprint behind it.

The car looked decent, ran pretty smoothly except in the mornings when it was a little stiff and hence without thinking twice, I bought it.

As any self respecting “proud” owner, I had to take the vehicle for a checkup; and to generally feel good about everything, I decided that I would give it an overhaul by changing every single oil in it; including the transmission oil, brake oil, steering oil, differential oil etc. The car also needed a few parts replaced including the oil gasket and the head-lights.

And so, armed with such an honorable thought, I went to a workshop near my place here in Sunnyvale. There was one sahippu working there and so, I started asking him questions. The conversation went something like this:

Q: “Do you think you can inspect the car to see if anything needs to done?”

A: “You have to ask Charlie.

Q: “Can you atleast check to see if any of the oils need to be changed?”

A: “You have to ask Charlie.

Q: “Can you check the brakes?

A: “You have to ask Charlie.

And he kept on doing what he was doing……….. Work I suppose!

And so, I tried a different tact.

Q: “When will Charlie be here?

A: “You have to ask Charlie.

That pretty much stumped me and was the final nail in the coffin.

And so I stepped outside, no sure what to do. All this while, I expected Mr. Charlie to be a big strapping 6 foot sahippu.

Suddenly, one Indian drove into the garage and it turned out that he was actually Mr. Charlie.

And so, I put these above mentioned questions to him as succinctly as possible. As soon as Mr. Charlie started speaking, I just knew it!!!!!!!!!!! And I had to cut him short….

I asked him, “Chetta, Malayalee anno?” (Brother, are you a Malayalee?)

Athe”, (Yes) was the short and sweet reply.

And so, in mallu I asked him about the other chap and told him that he was not responsive at all.

Mr. Charlie said with a smile, “Avannu oru jwouli ariyatha jwoulikkaran” (He is a worker who does not know anything).

And Mr. Charlie continued, “He has just joined now and is learning the tricks of the trade”.

The whole thing reminded me so much of “K and K automobiles” from the film “Aram + Aram = Kinnaram”.

And so finally, after discussing everything, Mr. Charlie quoted “X” dollars to get everything done. We ended up haggling over the price and after 15 minutes of hard discussion, we agreed on the very same “X” dollars; says a lot about my haggling skills.

The only promise I extracted from Mr. Charlie was that he alone would work on the car and not the other chap.

After that day at the “Work-shappu”, the car has been running decently (touchwood). Just hope that it does not breakdown in the middle of nowhere or late at night.

PS: The title of the post is a classic dialog from the above mentioned film. Listening to this song now.
