Lagically speaking!

July 16, 2010

Grandma (maternal) has a strong opinion in just about any topic in the world, and I found out last week, she also has certain strong “ideas” about my marriage as well.

Her husband, my granddad (RIP) was a powerfully built man; a man who commanded strong respect from others. But at home, it was always the opposite. She pretty much took most of the important domestic decisions and he always got to play the role of a “Yes Man” to perfection. 😛

She belongs to a generation who never believed in beating around the bush. She only said what she meant and just when people might make the mistake of labeling her “old fashioned”; she proves them all wrong.

For example, a couple of years back, when my cousin sister told the family that she was in love, the first questions which came up were, “Religion? Region? and Caste?”

On the other hand, my grandma’s first question was, “Nalla paiyan-aa?” (Is he a good guy?)

And when she is in her flow, she loves dishing out tons of advice; and her idea of a conversation is never like a sugar coated doughnut, but more like a spicy vethal kozhambu.

Well, back to last week; grandma was in one of her more generous “advice giving” moods.

Well, the girl should be blah blah and more blah……………………….” She droned on for sometime.

I do not know if they have a new thesaurus released in Tamil, but she certainly used a lot of words to make her stance on this matter amply clear.

I managed a weak “seri”, “hmm”, and “ok” now and then; desperately trying to change the topic. But nope, when she has something to say; there is no stopping her.

And she finally said, stressing on every word, “And importantly, the girl has to be beautiful”.

But paati, that is not that important”, I tried telling her.

Never known for mincing her words, she said with a final stamp of authority, “You don’t know anything. For the kid to look beautiful/cute, atleast one of the parents has to be good looking”.

All I could manage was a weak “Ooho…errrr…ok”.

How does one refute this kind of logic?

PS: Listening to this now
