Pass me the rum,” demanded Joseph and he continued with a smile, “You guys are slowing down; I am already on my 3rd swig”.

“Dude, don’t shift into the fourth gear this fast. We just have this single bottle with us,” replied a concerned Vinay.

Not to worry guys; we can surely get another one from somewhere. After all, we are in the great city called Trivandrum,” said Naushad.

You might have expected these three college students to be in some run-down, decrepit bar in town or maybe in their hostel room but no, these students were in their favorite watering spot right inside their college campus!!!

There was something therapeutic about that “spot” that they liked; right on top of the dome of the planetarium that they had in college. Legend had it that the planetarium used to function about 30 years ago, but it was just perfect for these night owls at the present.

The spooky view from this spot was something that had grown on them steadily over a period of four years. Under the moonlit sky, straight ahead the college ground looked its magnificent best as it shimmered in the moonlight; on the right, the big indoor stadium loomed massive and high along with the college open air amphitheatre; and on the left, dense harsh vegetation that housed everything from ghosts to vipers covered the landscape.

Pretty soon, they did what they knew best, i.e. emptied the bottle in record time and Naushad said, “Joseph, let’s go buy the next one and Vinay, you wait at the hostel.”

It is already one in the night now. Why do you want to get another bottle now and from where if I may ask? GP would definitely be closed now” retorted Vinay.

It was a taunt; one which Naushad did not like and there was nothing more important to him at that moment that getting a bottle. He stood up very slowly taking his time to get his balance on top of the slippery dome, looked up at the moon and said, “It is the soul of darkness and the splendor of the radiant moon which makes us take these decisions. We are but helpless mortals who get sucked into its splendid vortex.”

And pretty soon, they made their way to the “Grand Paradise Bar” near their college; their “home bar” as they all used to call it.

One thing which Naushad always enjoyed was riding late at night. It gave him the feeling that he was floating very gently above the deserted road and soon after a small relaxing ride, they reached the rickety gate of the “Grand Paradise Bar”.

The grandeur of the place only existed in its name. It was a typical mallu bar which catered to the daily wage laborer, filled with wooden tables and chairs all set in an expansive dingy room. Every single day, from 7 in the evening to 12, the place would be flooded with people but now at the present, it looked deserted with not a soul in sight.

“I just hope our friend, Kanappan Chettan is still awake,” Naushad said in sotto voce and opened the gate.

As they made their way to the back of the bar, Kanappan Chettan himself came running out and hissed these words, “What are you guys doing here? Have you not heard the news? There is a curfew on now thanks to some gang war. You better leave this place immediately if you guys don’t want to sleep in jail tonight.”

It was a known fact to them that the Sreekaryam police blokes had a particular dislike for the students of his college and so thanking Kanappan Chettan, they left without wasting a minute.

Let us not give them a chance to feel happy” Joseph told Naushad they raced back to college.

As they were riding back to college in silence, Naushad kept thinking this over. He certainly could not go back without the bottle and that was when, another bright idea stuck him and he stopped the bike right in the middle of the highway.

What is now dude,” Joseph asked.

Remember about how Krishna was telling us that his dad has just came back from the gulf last week and he has a bottle for us,” asked Naushad.

You are crazy dude!!!! It is 1: 30 in the night. They would be sleeping now!!!!” exclaimed Joseph knowing what his friend would suggest next.

Well, there is only one way to find out” replied Naushad and he then made a U-turn.

As they made their way through the antediluvian tracks which led to Krishna’s house in Kesavadasapuram, they were greeted by a sight that they never expected at all at 1:45 in the night.

The whole neighborhood was out on the street!!!

They were at once stopped by the mob and the questioning soon started.

Where are you from? What are you doing here at this time? Are you drunk?” And many more questions.

Apparently a robbery had happened at a house nearby and people were on the streets waiting for the police and unfortunately for Naushad and Joseph, they fit the pattern perfectly for the mob.

Naushad did not want to wait for the police; not at this time of the night and not definitely when drunk. He and Joseph tried their best to explain their situation and how they were here to see their friend Krishna but the mob would not listen to them.

In due time, the mob almost started turning violent when Krishna himself burst upon the scene. He had come out of his house after seeing all the commotion. The mob was finally satisfied when Krishna personally vouched for Naushad and Joseph and the mob let them go.

Actually dude, we are here for the bottle,” Naushad told Krishna sheepishly once they were out of earshot.

Ooh, there is not a chance I can get it out of the house with all these people here. Please get lost before the police get here” Krishna replied hurriedly and made his way to his house.

Not wasting a moment, Naushad soon started driving back to hostel without the bottle.

No more stops. I have had enough entertainment for the night,” Joseph said earnestly and Naushad also grudgingly admitted that he was short of ideas.

By 2:20, they reached their hostel and made his way to Vinay’s room with a heavy heart.

As they stepped into the room, they could not believe their eyes when they saw Vinay resting on the bed with a peg in hand, a full bottle of OMR on the table!!!

Naushad was too astounded to speak and Joseph said, “You have some explaining to do mister”.

Dude, once I came back to the room, I realized that I had a bottle here which I had stored in my bag a long time back and hence I was having a peg waiting for you guys,” replied Vinay.

With mock indignation, he also added, “I don’t see a bottle with you guys. How could you guys do this??”

Naushad and Joseph then took turns to explain the whole sequence to Vinay who had a hearty laugh at his friend’s misfortunes.

Allah, what is with people and the night? Why do people behave so strangely and why are they always suspicious at this time?” asked Naushad after recounting the whole tale.

Dude, you actually told me that answer to that question before you left” replied Vinay happily taking another sip.

What??” exclaimed Naushad!

Vinay gave Naushad a wry smile and said, “It is the soul of darkness and the splendor of the radiant moon which make people take these decisions. They are but helpless mortals who get sucked into its vortex.”

1. Story is based on what happened to a couple of friends.

2. I have always believed that darkness has its own soul.

3. The title (in Malayalam) of this post means “The Soul of Darkness”.
