The man, who was resting on the sand, took the girl and left.

June 2, 2010

8 years back:

“The institution of arranged marriage is fast failing. I cannot believe that in this day and age, people still go for it. Anyways, in my mind I am very clear about it. I will only marry the girl I love.”

Every single word was spoken with passion, a true force of character. He stood with a puffed up chest looking clearly important with his hands on hips. He also looked confident and believed in what he had just said.

We listened on (a small group) wonderstruck as the man ranted on and raved. I was actually very impressed back then, with the conviction that this dude had and his defined principles, so early in his life.

A year back:

My good friend, codenamed Jacksa who quoted the above line was apparently in quite a quandary. The fact that he was not getting any younger as the days sped past him, seemed to have a struck a pivotal blow.

On one side, his parents (as all good nasrani parents) were pressurizing him to get married and on the other hand, he firmly wanted to fall in love and then get married. The plan which actually sounded impressive back then did not seem like a good plan anymore to us.

When his parents first broached this topic, Jacksa realized that it was high time he started on his serious quest to find love. All that while, he had waited for “love” to happen but since nothing had happened, he took a major decision.

He took a decision that he would use every tool in his armory to find his “true love”, in other words, a multi pronged attack. He first spruced up his orkut profile; joined communities left, right and center. Facebook, he deemed was also very important to his mission and joined that as well.

He made it a point to visit the church regularly, even other different ones, all in hope. He forged new friendships, renewed old ones and even recycled a few others.

Any update or any news in his quest would soon spread like flash flood among our group. The last bit of news that I had heard was that his chances were looking good and that he spent hours talking to a girl.

The Present:

I got a mail from my friend, Mr. KJ last week. The mail said nothing. It did not have a heading and there was nothing in it except a single attachment, a pdf file.

I started laughing as soon I opened it up. It was the matrimonial profile of Jacksa in a very respectable matrimonial website.

I called him up immediately. Yeah, as a good friend, I was supposed to pull his leg right?

Jacksa: “Hellon.”

Me: “Aliya, it is me, Ajit. I just saw your matrimonial profile on —-. What happened aliya? I thought that you had succeeded in your mission.”

Jacksa: “Almost aliya almost………. but long back, I had introduced her to another friend of mine.”

Me: “So?

Jacksa: “To cut the long story short, mannum chari ninnavan pennu kondu poyadae”.

The literal translation of the last line (a famous mallu one-liner) is the very title of this post.

————————————

And I spent the next 10 minutes pulling his leg about love, Malappuram kathi and life generally………………..

PS: He is probably singing this song now.
