The Forsaken!!!

March 31, 2010

I am the luckiest person in the whole wide world”, Ravi kept telling himself!!!!!

He wanted to jump with joy and shout at the top of his voice but that would have been the most indecent thing to do because of the “occasion”.

He just could not believe it that he was the sole survivor of the plane crash. He did not have a single scratch on him to show for the crash and he had never felt more alive than this. Every breath, which he voluntarily gulped down now, reminded him of this fact; reminded him of this fragile essence called “life” and every heart beat thumped in his chest and registered in his mind; every single one.

What he saw around him was carnage, the lifeless bodies of strangers strewn carelessly all over the place and the desert was doing what it knew best; slowly covering up the evidences thanks to a sand storm which had just started brewing. Another couple of hours and he knew that there would not be much to show for the brutal display of nature’s fury. The Sun was fading away at an even pace and he had to scrimmage for things before darkness fell in and get the fire started.

His only hope was that the search and rescue team would be there soon to get him out of this hellhole.

His day had started pretty ordinarily. He had gone to office in Gurgaon with the hope that he could leave early but his boss had asked him to travel to Jamnagar for an urgent meeting. Since there were no commercial flights available, his company had booked a small plane and they were a party of 5, all from various departments.

I am not going to make it to the meeting anyways now,” he smiled to himself.

Starting a fire, a thing which he had taken for granted all his life was the toughest thing that he had ever done but finally, after a long time, he got one started up. Thus he spent the whole night near the crash site hoping, waiting and praying for rescue to come along and eventually he fell asleep.

When he woke up early the next morning, he realized that he had to get moving as the desert had completely swallowed up all evidences of the crash and he did not even have water with him.

The vast expanse looked the same in all four directions. No scout camp had ever prepared him for this contingency and he absolutely had no sense of where he was. The panoramic view was breathtaking but he knew that beneath this seemingly beautiful passive landscape, there lurked many dangers.

East, it is going to be,” he told himself.

And so with a short prayer he started walking in that direction hoping that he could keep a straight line. He had also heard stories of people walking around in circles when lost in the desert.

And so he kept walking never relenting to his inner feelings or the failings of his mortal self. The desert contour kept changing continuously during his walk and two things which never changed were the brown sand and the clear blue sky. Every sand dune that he had to climb gave him hope; hope that he could spot people, a village or even just an oasis on the other side and thus, he was disappointed countless times but he still kept at it.

In a couple of hours, when the Sun reached its zenith, it gave the sand a reddish hue and it was as hot as hell. He wanted to tear out all his clothing but he knew that he could not afford to suffer from a sun stroke that day.

And so, he plugged away at it, never looking at the watch, never letting pity gain a foothold in his emotions. By that time, his throat was parched and he felt weak but he did not have much of a choice. He kept walking like a man possessed.

Soon, every step became a struggle and his muscles burnt of pain. From the corner of his eyes, he could spot the vultures watching him dispassionately from above.  A good few of them had crowded over him and were gliding above, watching and just biding their time.

Suddenly, he fell over and he just could not get up and that was when the bitter truth hit home.

At that moment, he realized that he was just but an aberration, an unnatural blot in the landscape of the desert; one that Nature would clear up pretty soon and he started weeping at the total disregard that Nature had for unlucky souls like him.

It dawned upon him that some higher power had ordained him to be the forsaken!!!

As his eyes closed in this delirious state, he had only one thought going through his head like a recorded tape.

I am the unluckiest person in the whole wide world”.

PS: listening to this song in repeat mode.

Nicely written. So, the world is not like what it seems to be. From the luckiest to the unluckiest… just takes a some hours to realise that. Everything is an illusion and let man understand this. WOW, this story is fantastic. 🙂

Superbly written….. is not what i wanna say! 🙄

I suggest 90% of ur writings shud be fiction (or real-life inspired fiction)… u got some knack for it…. i almost felt like i walked across the desert myself.

That’s one tale of optimism gone awry!! 😛

“the desert was doing what it knew best; slowly covering up the evidences” – this is my fav line in this story!

Oh this was excellent! The best piece of fiction I’ve read in some time 🙂 Only some customary nit-picking from my end: It was a small party of 5, and excluding him, only 5. So why term it ‘carnage’? That apart, this was very beautifully written. Mention of the desert brought ‘the Alchemist’ back to my mind. Great writing,OG.
    OG: thanks pal 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛
I mentioned “carnage” becoz I believe that carnage can be small scale as well 😛 what is carnage for me might not be carnage for someone else 😛 😛 😛

loved the line about the desert “slowly covering up the evidences”… literally made me feel sand that was slowly covering up my feet!
    OG: ROFL!!!!!! 😛
    Well done!
    OG: Thanks!!!!!! 😛 😛 😛 😛
