Eloquent, my silence and your silence!

February 25, 2010

Killi (Malayalam): A person who hangs near the bus door whose primary job is to make noise and watch the chicks and whose secondary job is to usher the passengers into the bus.

 —————

It was a hot day in Cochin and Ajit felt suffocated thanks to the very high humidity.

Damn this time before the monsoons” was all he could say.

It was the latter part of May and the crucial south-west monsoon had not yet started on its blitzkrieg through Kerala but there was enough humidity in the air to stifle life all around.

It was 2 PM and the “Surya Bhagawan” blazed in his entire splendor and Ajit was at the Kaloor Bus Terminal waiting for the past half an hour for a friend who had not yet shown up.

He spent his time watching the brightly colored red private buses which came in continuously hoping that he would spot his friend in atleast one of them. It was a time when the cursed mobile phone had not yet become a part of his life and the only means of meeting people was by deciding a common spot/time beforehand and leaving the rest to fate.

It was business as usual at the Kaloor Bus depot; one of the most important bus stops in the city, very close to the “Ernakulam Town” railway station. In spite of the oppressive climate, Ajit could only smile when he spotted people teeming around the local Thattukada for a cup of hot chaya (tea), which proved yet again that the average mallu could not do without his regular dose of tea.

It is often said that a person watches things around him with remote interest when he has nothing else to do and Ajit was no different. With absolutely nothing else to do but kill time, he watched every single bus which made its way into the bus depot; watched on as the suave killi in his lungi jumped out before the bus would roll over to a complete stop calling out the destination; watched on as the bus finally made its way out.

For the past half an hour, Ajit had been subjected to the cries of “Thevara”, “Fort Kochi”, “Mattanchery”, “Thoppumpady”, “Tripunithara”, “Vytilla”, “Kadavanthara” and “Padma vazhi” by the various killis and he was sick of it.

It was during this relentless boring cycle that he suddenly spotted a curious looking dilapidated bus roll up into the bus stop and there in the window seat, sat a very beautiful girl.

He spotted her first or no, it might have been the other way around but both their eyes met as the bus stuttered its way into the bus bay and stopped right in front of him.

Ajit just could not take his eyes off the exquisite beauty but the alarming fact which very slowly sank in was that the girl was also not looking anywhere else but directly at him.

It was a magical moment for Ajit. He had read stuff like this only in books, or watched it in movies but he had never believed that it could happen to him. It was as if time had stood still for him. Her eyes were so magnetic that he could not but keep looking into them. He was impervious to the crowd around and thoughts of his friends were all but forgotten in a space of a few seconds.

After an “eternity” of 20 seconds, he broke that sacred eye contact and looked elsewhere; anywhere else but at the girl as the experience had been unnerving but the bus driver still was not ready to leave the bus depot.

After what was another “eternity“, the killi rang the bell and the bus very slowly made its way out of the bus bay and Ajit very slowly stole a glance towards the girl.

He got the shock of his life coz the girl was still looking at him and they maintained this eye contact for as long as they could. Ajit watched on as the bus disappeared over the “North Over bridge” and Ajit realized that the “eyes” could actually speak a thousand words……………

Never had silence been more eloquent than this in his life!!!

——————————-

I have always wanted to capture/paint a picture of Cochin hence the reference to places etc.

The title of the post and the actual post (incident happened eons back) is inspired by this brilliant song which I rediscovered two days back.

What kept you from going after her??? Gosh are you regularly stared at by girls that you didn’t bother to check out who she is? Am sure if someone dared to look at me that long either I would have asked his name or given him a piece of my mind (in case he is the vayanokki types)

First Kanagu and now you…what’s with you eligible bachelors??? 😯

Hey keep the malayalam songs coming will ya…it’s so great to see all of them.
