Mallu Men and Dancing!

February 6, 2010

Some time back, nope actually a long time back, I had written a post about a song that spawned a new generation of mallu men enlightened in the art of Disco Dancing. Now the time has come to do a follow-up post on a similar topic.

Unfortunately not much has changed in the last 45 years. The quintessential average mallu man still does not care a hoot about dancing in a civil manner. He can only and I mean “wonly” dance if he is a couple of pegs down.

Give him a Ganamela with mediocre music, and he still would enjoy it by dancing all night long if he is a couple down. But if he is not a couple down, he would stand in a corner looking distinctly irritated.

Take any party, anywhere and you will always find that the mallu man generally gravitates towards the bar and not the dance floor. After he is a couple down, he might then venture into dancing but by then it would be hard to tell if he is actually dancing or showing unrestrained motion of the rotary muscles impaired due to alcohol. He would then proceed to pull other people also onto the dance floor to take part in this comic spectacle. At this point, he might be under the impression that he is dancing like MJ but in reality, he would actually be dancing like his not-so-biological twin. I have seen this happen so many times.

The average mallu is also not blessed with a dancing gene unlike the men from his neighboring states and he does not mind letting the whole world know this.

I still remember my friend codenamed Maani. A stanch DYFI member, he started a new style of dancing called “The Protest March” style in college. He would stand in the center of the group with his left arm on his hip holding the mundu. He would then periodically point his other arm towards the skies from time to time and sing the song in high volume much like how he used to shout the party slogans in those days.

He called that “dancing” back then. He is in the “gelf” now.

The dancing skills of mallu men are actually best illustrated by our famous superstars.

Our global star is blessed with two left feet and also two left hands but he has no qualms about showing his skill. He has, I believe, studied the finer nuances of the art.

Our galactic star who cannot do any role other than an honest cop does not believe in the institution called dancing.

Our universal star is blessed with nimble feet but an equally dense girth which he is proud of and he does not mind shaking a leg if required even if it appears absurd.

Our multiverse star believes in dancing with panache and he also believes that emoting is dancing.

We are all but ordinary souls who follow such noble standards set by our superstars…………

PS: Post inspired by events witnessed recently.
