September 10, 2009

The pounding of his heart did not abate nor did the pace of his pulse.

Why is this so God”, he screamed; a scream which he alone could hear in his mind and then he looked heavenward in search of an answer; in search of guidance.

All his life, Arvind had lived by a “code”; a code of conduct; code of honor. Even though he was mentally a strong man, he had had his occasions of weakness; but he had not fallen prey to any of the “vices” that the world had to offer as yet.

The “code” or in other words, his personal “bushido” was very important to him; it figured in his every single thought process; his every single action.

He always kept telling himself that the people who did not live life by the “code” would get punished in the future for their actions but as time passed by, he did not see that happen.

But, his “bushido” kept urging him to walk straight without cutting corners; without engaging in activities that would reap “bad karma”.

And so, he stoically kept at it……

But it just took a single phone call to rattle his faith.

Conditioning had made him despise a person who he was genetically programmed to love. That person believed in doing everything that was outside his “code” and that person was happily living life.

This just is not right” he pleaded; this time, more with himself than with God.

It took about 5 minutes for him to recover his composure. He had no other option but to keep walking in his chosen path ever believing in the accuracy of his “bushido”.

He absolutely had no other option…………..

  8. September 10, 2009 11:08 am

Life alas but jst comes once…lives bond together just for a while..why live it alone and in writhing pain..when u can forego sme of ur bushidos for the happiness of the other and smile about it..isnt that basic ‘let go’ of self called love..or kindness?
OG: yes, that is a good point, but what if that other person…….. totally destroys your code??? then what would you do?

    • September 14, 2009 11:03 am put it bluntly hath no matter what..u accept the erson in his/her totality!! and if u r nt able aint love at all..
here more than that persons is the protagonists mind that is confused.. it is half way into ‘infatuation’ for the other person and halfway scared of the imperfections… 🙂

I hope this is not a true story. But if it IS, then I won’t be surprised. To each, his own! The thing with ‘personal CODE’ is, it is very subjective. Therein lies the root cause of all misunderstanding and disappointment.
    OG: yeah. agree!!!!!!!!!

  13. September 10, 2009 2:42 pm

    That was deep..

I can understand ‘But, his “bushido” kept urging him to walk straight without cutting corners; without engaging in activities that would reap “bad karma”.’

‘Conditioning had made him despise a person who he was genetically programmed to love. That person believed in doing everything that was outside his “code” and that person was happily living life.’

Does this mean that he is ignoring his instincts (genetically programmed to love) to abide by his ‘code’ – which might not be relevant in every situation? Enlighten me please!

Ezuthukaran OG – that was very profound!

    • September 10, 2009 5:55 pm

yes “hail smithus”, I meant something like that………

about how that person totally does not follow his code………… but as they say blood is thicker than water….

arvind has no other option but to keep loving that person inspite of his habits………

the last sentence signifies that arvind is going to follow his code at all costs…….. he takes that decision in those 5 mins….

      • September 10, 2009 5:59 pm

Thank you so much for putting me out of my misery 🙂

And please more posts like this! This was fantastic!

  14. September 10, 2009 4:52 pm

Machi… this is a real serious and I am finding it hard to understand…
but this is what I have understood… our instincts or a new found principles makes us to break the code of conduct we set for ourselves at times… Correct me if I am wrong…
OG: ROFL!!! dude… I meant the opp. here……….. we try our best to follow our code!!!!!!

  15. September 10, 2009 5:43 pm

Hey OG – I have been coming here every time I get a spare minute – dying to know what exactly you meant!
    OG: 😛 😛 😛 😛

  16. September 10, 2009 6:06 pm

I got the gist of it after reading Smitha’s comment and your response to it… Great post.
But what was the phone call about????
OG:: Thanku Thanku!!!! the phone call about that person’s antics…

  17. September 10, 2009 7:13 pm

it might seem easy to take the easy way out but the little voice will keep troubling us if we do!
    OG: yup !!!!!! agree!!!!!

  18. September 11, 2009 4:26 am

    Deep and profound.

we live but just once….live by what makes you happy, by what you think is right. It is the job of the ‘voice’ to put ideas and thoughts into our head. what you think is outside the ‘code’ for the other person is really that person’s ‘code’. if it is felt that by walking straight one is cutting corners then it is time to examine the ‘code’.
maybe the ‘code’ has a ‘Bug’ which needs to be fixed 🙂
OG: now i am confused! hahahaha but yes rightly said

  19. September 11, 2009 6:50 am

    Ennada ithu..onnum puriyallaye.. 😐

Let me go read it with a clear mind. I am almost in zzzzz…. mode.

  20. September 11, 2009 6:56 am

Poor Arvind. He is the man who lived by principles and believed in Karma. He believed that god would give the reward according to the conduct. So he always chose the right path even when it was difficult but then he was frustrated to see that people who chose wrong path didn’t get bad karma.

Sometimes it is frustrating to see that those who choose ideal path have to endure more pain than the tricksters.
OG: yup………. i know sols……… it really gets irritating whn people who cut corners dont get wat they deserve!
    But Arvind still believed in,

    “Karmanye Vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana,
Ma Karma Phala Hetur Bhurmatey Sangostva Akarmani”

OG: wat does this mean sols?????

    • September 11, 2009 7:32 am

Solilo !!! God bless u !!! Thanks for putting it in layman’s terms. Its a lot easier now.

    • September 11, 2009 4:05 pm

Are you asking the meaning of that shlok, Ajit?

It means “Keep doing your work without worrying about the reward”.

It is also an indication that good work will be appreciated one day.
OG: thanks!!!!1 thought that it would be something like this 😛

  21. September 11, 2009 7:37 am

OG, Are u that Aravind ???? Or you are that other person ????
OG: I am like “arvind” 😛
But gud that Aravind stuck with his code of conduct life – thats the most difficult decision to take. Temptations and distractions are too many in this world – how we keep ourselves away from those and lead a purposeful life is a very challenging one for every individual.

    Gud thinking, OG !!
    OG: thanks!!!1 😛 and yes, I agree!!!!

  22. September 11, 2009 7:39 am

Okies EOG, I read it first just totally not prepared for profoundess, that too put like this.. in every line I looked for EOG… the thamashakaran….
OG: hehehehehehehehehehehe 😛 i do write serious stories as well 😛
My mistake oh Ezuthukaran EOG! Have knocked off work and sat in complete peace to read it, coz this piece by u deserves that kinda attention…
    OG: ROFL!!!!!!! 😛 wokays 😛
Also read ur replies to Smithu, had arrived at similar thoughts..
If Arvind follows his code that he defines what he believes is the right way to live, then its his choice and he him staying strong on it speaks for his faith…
OG: yes, but temptation is always there in his mind 😛
He always kept telling himself that the people who did not live life by the “code” would get punished in the future for their actions but as time passed by, he did not see that happen.

So EOG, Arvind is following his code to avoid bad karma or coz he firmly believes that it’s the “ideal way” to live.
OG: good question……… I thing it is to avoid “bad karma”………. to uphold his reputation coz he is mere human 😛
he doesn’t see ppl being punished for not following it, but how does he define punishment? Maybe he doesn’t see it coz they ppl he looks at do not treat it as punishment… and so he feels they are not punished…
I mean, at a level, when u cut corners, u expect to face the outcome, and that doesn’t feel like punishment… not to the ppl who compromise on the code…. Am I making any sense here??! For once I feel I am not being able to express… damn EOG! 😛 ok, moving on…
OG: he feels that they are not punished properly 😛
Conditioning had made him despise a person who he was genetically programmed to love. That person believed in doing everything that was outside his “code” and that person was happily living life.

Shudn’t Arvind let go of conditioning perhaps? I mean, we each of us define our codes in life, and they differ. also depends on what kinda deeds are involved in “breaking the code” unless the person is harming lives, physically or emotionally, thru actions, Arvind shudn’t be sore for a happy life of the person living outside his code … isn’t love unconditional… be it genetic or otherwise….
OG: I very strongly believe that love is not unconditional………….. it cannot be…….. there are limits that people need to follow 😛
Conflict of thought EOG… is Arvind living his life in this code, coz he is fearful of punishment? Of facing bad karma? So wud his code not hold value if there were to be no consequences of breaking it?
Wud he do something right for avoiding bad karma, or simply coz he believes its right….
OG: I think he follow it to aviod bad karma……….. coz he is mere human 😛 but he will not let up
its like, wud I buy a train ticket coz I feel I shud pay for the service I use, or will I buy it just coz there are chances of paying a fine if I got caught…
    Sigh EOG! 🙂
    OG: ROFL! 😛 what a comparison 😛
I was sincerely not prepared for this post, that too from u…. Dived into it this morning, and loved it…
(don’t roll eyes, crafty can be quite a grandma at times..)

Yet again crafty says to u.. u are not OG… u are what she called u … EOG, and this time, for a whole new reason…

    OG: 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 hugsssssssss

    • September 11, 2009 5:24 pm

      just realised….

i wrote my comment without reading crafty’s….

but now when i read hers… i realise we have both written very similar viewpoints… but expressed it differently!!! 🙂

thats why we both call u EOG!!! 😛 yay!!
      OG: 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛

  23. September 11, 2009 7:41 am

    😀 😀 😆 🙄 😈

making up for lack of smileys in my comment
    tee hee 😆

    i love u for this post EOG… i can’t seem to get over it…
    OG: heheheheheheheheheheheh 😛

  24. September 11, 2009 8:35 am

  25. September 11, 2009 12:13 pm

    Very nicely put in words!!
OG: hey thanks and welcome here 😛

  26. September 11, 2009 5:18 pm

omg! thank goodness vimmuuu warned me before i started reading this post. otherwise i wud have thot this blog was hijacked by an alien.. or at the very least, that OG has had an identity theft!
    OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!!! 😛
hmm njan raavile kaanunnathu vare kuzhappamillayirunnu… eppozhanu ee paavathinte thala thirinijathu!! 😀 😀
    OG: 😀 😀 😀
jokes apart, wonderfully written… very poignant post
didnt realise u cud write so fluidly..
    OG: thanku thanku!
    and as for the story…
😐 i wud prefer it if with Arvind follows the code because he wants to and he knows it is the rite thing to do… and not because there is “no other option”.
    OG: hmm………………. 😛
and as for ppl who get punished when they dont do good… life hasnt come to an end yet. there is plenty of time for the story to end. wait till the ending.
the suffering maybe already there – perhaps u are not able to see it becoz it is not in the form u r expecting it to be in…. think about it ….
    dont judge too hastily yet…

“what goes around, always comes around. ”
    OG: agree 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛

@ Eog: i also have one special dialogue, one by Indyeah n Don Soli that got me to ur blog first time…. i LOORVE that dialogue..

          😆 😆

  27. September 11, 2009 5:44 pm

Everyone has their own code, their own virtues…its all relative. I have despised many, but I make sure I do not confront them(mainly because I hate fighting ) ..
OG: that is a good policy 😛
Oh! ya something which came to my mind ” Beating a convention is a convention by itself” 😛 (CA classes 😛 Accounting conventions 🙂 )
OG: ROFL!!!!!!!!!! so you are using your knowledge to good use 😛

Even I believe my “code” but my manager and customer never believe it …and more so all testers find bug in the “code”…
But still I walk in the same path with same “code”…..
This buggey world makes my code corrupted too….

    This was my serious plight..

    but on lighter note….

Aliya it was too profound … everybody is saying ……
