OG and Shopping!!!

June 13, 2009

Copy of shopping
There are times when OG feels like he is the bravest soul in the world and there are times when he feels like a coward. What I mean is that, if I had lived about 2500 years back, I would have gladly signed up for Leonidas’s hara-kiri mission against Xerxes. If I had lived about 600 years back, I probably would have joined Robin and his band of merry men. If I had lived about 80 years back, I would have joined Bhagat Singh, the first Indian socialist or maybe Subramaniya Bharatiar in his poetic fight against the British.

But when it comes to certain things, OG quivers from head to toe and starts sweating profoundly and that is what happened last week.

My life was chugging along peacefully until last week when I spoke to my baby sister.

My baby sister MR, well, she gave me an ultimatum. She wanted a few things from America and I have to go shopping for them. What she wanted was simple:

  1. A sunglass to protect herself against the Chennai summer, not big but not too small either.
  2. A college bag which should look small but should have the holding capacity of an Ashok Leyland truck.
  3. A makeup kit with all the stuff girls use.
  4. Perfume and the works.

Come on bro. you have to get me this simple list ASAP. Otherwise I will disown you”, she said rather strongly and I had no other option but to agree to her terms.

There are certain things in the world that I don’t like and shopping most definitely comes in the first position. I still remember as a kid accompanying my mom and other relatives on various shopping missions. I hated the fact that they had to see every single sari in the shop before deciding half heartedly upon a single one. I remember as a kid accompanying my relatives for sari shopping for my cousin’s marriage. My dad excused himself citing work and I initially felt sorry for him for missing all the fun but as the day wore on, I realized that he was actually a smart man. At the end of that day, I took a decision that I would NOT accompany ladies on shopping trips. “No ways, Never”, I told myself and thus started my allergy for shopping.

All these emotions were running madly through my head when my sister’s words brought me back to reality. The words were extra-ordinarily clear (the phone lines through 8000 miles are pretty good I say):

Remember Ajitttttttt. You HAVE to do this for me. Do not come up with your usual stupid lame excuses as in the past”, my sister’s words rung clearly and I could only muster a weak, “Yes madam” in response.

When it comes to shopping for women, always take the help of a member of that gender was the first thought that struck. I say this from experience. My nefarious cousin sister (of the Amman fame), as a rule insists that I give her the bill along with the gift so that she can exchange the gift item for something she likes. No formalities she says. I have also seen the many dress items which I have gifted to my sister languishing in the deepest corners of her wardrobe. So I sought the help of my friend Ms. NM.

“NM, I need your help. Please don’t let me down”, I said with the expression of a convict on a death row and I went on and told her my story.

“Don’t worry Ajit”, she said. “I will certainly help you but I need a few details for that”.

“What details”, I asked confused.

“Well, tell me about her taste, her style and how she looks”, NM said with authority. When I asked her about why she wanted these unnecessary details, she said:

“You doofus, the list that you gave me depends on this. How else can I buy the gifts? For the sunglass, I definitely need to see a photo of her and for the perfume and makeup; I need to know her taste”.

Since I did not know anything about my sister’s taste and sense of fashion, I told NM that I would consult my sister and get back to her.

“You useless guy”, was all NM said as she walked away.

So that evening, I called up my sister again,

“Hey kannaaaaa, nee eppadi irukka (Hey Dear, How are you)” I said in the sweetest tone possible.

“Ajit, by the very long “kanna”, I conclude that you have not yet bought the things. Now give me one good reason before I cut the call”, she said rather curtly.

And as a good brother, I explained my predicament and about how NM wanted the details. My sister took offense immediately and told me,

“Ajit, what is this? How is this possible? And you call yourself my brother. Shesh, this is bad” and she continued,

“I am not going to tell you anything. Shop for everything yourself and no question….. I will not answer any. Bye” and then gave the phone to my mom.

Now what am I supposed to do? I have no idea. But one thing is sure this weekend; OG is going to the mall to shop (that is, if I can get past this rather fortunate fever I caught today. What timing I say 😀 )!!!!!!!!!

Atleast you guys enjoy your weekend!!

PS: Before anyone thinks that I am a useless brother, let me also add that I love my sister and I also know what she wants! Some she likes and some she does not!!!

(I had to add this PS after Bones’s comment. ROFL…. :D)
Maybe I should make an entry into the mall like this:

Hahahahahahahahaha! It’s sweet of you to get your friend’s/collegue’s help but you don’t know your sister’s taste. VERY BAD OG. 😛
OG: What can I do? I am but a mere ordinary guy 😛
Have fun finding stuff for your sis. 😛
    OG: what fun 😛
LoL @ brave man and the quiver at the word or shopping.

    I love shopping. 😛
OG: I could have guessed that
LoL @ going with relatives and then them asking to see all the sari’s and half heartedly selecting possibly one. 😆
    OG: LOL!!!!

LoL! I take it it’s meant to be you the tough guy in the video. 😉
    Well keep dreaming OG. 😛
OG: Yes, just like the guy in video is also dreaming 😛

  5. June 13, 2009 3:25 am

    ha…ha…ha…

But OG I’m disappointed at your sense of observation or rather the lack of it…How can you not know your sister’s taste? I’m assuming you two have lived in the same house for at least a few yrs. …Disgraceful, utterly disgraceful…
OG: ROFL Bones, I do know what she wants……. what I mean is that I have an idea…. nothing beyond that when it comes to the finer details…….. 😛 but yes, my lack of observation in this matter is really poor…..
you are right, I need to improve 😛 but I want the best of my sister so I dont want to do the shopping myself coz I would get her something mediocore

I too hate shopping even for myself let alone for others…
    OG: Are you serious 😛

  6. June 13, 2009 4:34 am

hahaha…. u have my deepest sympathies dude! take the help of ur friend NM. that and with ur sharp knowledge of ur sis, u’ll be able to come up with something 😉
OG: yeah, I sure do hope so……. 😛 I have to meet deadline 😛
but however if u are thinking that all women are shopaholics, let me cheerfully convince u its a myth. i m not a shopping person at all… not by a long shot or short shot 😛 I shop only when necessary…I browse a couple of stores, set my sights on what I buy and immediately get out. That’s it. Not the long hours spent looking and looking and still looking thru different array of clothes trying them on and off, on and off… you get the idea. 😀
OG: that is good 😛 ROFL…. I know that many women dont like shopping 😛 good for you……. yeah, I get the idea
My dad keeps joking I’d make a cheap wife for someone someday… hmm u know what i better not remind him otherwise he’ll end up putting that on my matrimonial profile 😛 😛 ugh!!
OG: LOL!!!!! on which site is your matrimonial profile…. it should be ROFl-ing to browse thru it… hahahaha
Note: Not to be confused with outings… I love outings, walks, drives, eat-outs etc etc. Just dont make try on and take off dozens of clothes before walking out of the store buying nothing… I dont have the patience for that!
OG: hmmm, same here…. no patience for me as well

    • June 13, 2009 4:38 am

LOL @ the intro video 😀

P.S.: if ppl stare at u like THAT when u walk into a mall, then u really need visit the mall more often dude!!! 😛 😛
      OG: hehehehehehehehehehe 😛 LOL!!!!!

    • June 13, 2009 6:48 am

omg!! 😛 😛 “on which site is OUR matrimonial profile?” is that a direct malayalam translation (nammlude site evide style) or is that a typo???
i hope for ur sake and mine that it is either of the two!! 😛
OG: AYYYOOO!!!!! I am so sorry…. it was a typo……… I just noticed it 😛 sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • June 13, 2009 7:14 am

        oh sheri… jeevichu poyekotte…! apology accepted… hmph!!! 😛 😛 lol

  7. June 13, 2009 5:01 am

OMG! best of luck OG, my heartfelt sympathies…..
being a girl me doesn’t know what to shop for other gal pals, u better wear a helmet while ur sis goes thru ur shopping….
    OG: ROFL!!!! LOL…. helmet…. hahahahaha 😛

shopping is dangerous. shopping with women is fatal.
me likes the boy shopping funda and live by it – think what u want, ask at the shop, don’t get it, leave…no browsing for other stuff!! 😀
    OG: good policy……. I like it 😛
cudn’t watch that video, but if u gonna enter the mall based on that, then put a make sure to get a video of you too….
OG: why cant you watch video?? and yes, I will take video of it 😛 watch the video if possible
    😀 😀

will we get pics of what u shopped for? maybe girls could predict what ur fate would be after looking at ur shopping! 😆
    OG: pics, I dont know 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛

  8. June 13, 2009 6:12 am

    OGL ROFL….
Aliyaa, You should have put the small clipping from Yaaradi nee mohini where Dhanush goes for shopping with the maamis happily and comes back all dead !
OG: LOL…. I have not seen the film…….
    All the best 😀
    OG: Thanks!

  9. June 13, 2009 7:27 am

    LOL machi 😆

you shouldn’t have called your sister… girls will find some wrong in whatever we buy for them.. now it’s like you confessed.. so no way of escaping.. 😛
OG: 😛 ROFL dude……. I will buy her the very best!!!!!!!!
how hard you try now.. it will be hard to convince her 🙂
    OG: ROFL>>>>>
Let the lord save you from arrows of words 🙂
OG: I have my ways of dealing with such situations 😛

  10. June 13, 2009 7:42 am

    hehe..and the travails continue..eh..;-D
you are finding trouble shopping for one person…uh..
I have trouble when I have to shop for almost a panchayat when i go for vacations!!
OG: yes aliya, the travails continue 😛 LOL at shopping for whole panchayat 😛 LOL!!! hahahahaha
i sort of miss having a sister after reading this post..
OG: I miss my sis as well 😛

  11. June 13, 2009 7:45 am

OG: no apologies please…. 😛 you are here and that is good enuf for this ordinary guy

  13. June 13, 2009 8:54 am

I feel sorry for you man . 🙂 You have my deepest sympathies . And the bit about saree shopping , it brought back horrid memories . Dozing off , while perched on a stool , small enough even for a kid’s ass . And even shopping with my male friends makes a zombie out of me , leave alone the female ones . I hope you accomplish this herculean task . 😀 My best wishes . 🙂

OG: WHAT!!! you have had trouble shopping with guy frds…… 😛 LOL….I cannot imagine that……. 😛 OMG! Thanks!

    • June 13, 2009 5:54 pm

Yeah . Imagine that . 1 guy – tried 17 pair of jeans – to ultimately buy one pair . That is like the equivalent of two women .
OG: hahahahahahahahaha 😛 best of luck dude 😛 LOL

      • June 15, 2009 6:43 am

Kislay are you trying to make it seem as if guys are as bad or are guys as bad as gals? 😀
I am trying to figure out where you are going with this 😀

  16. June 13, 2009 4:11 pm

Ajith, biggest mistake u did was, u asked help to a girl, that too to buy make up set and related stuffs.I remember one of my friend had similar experiance. He was in chennai silk to buy a saree for his mom and he shortlisted 10 and got confused which one to select. His freind happend to came there and he approached her.what she did was she selected 10 more saries and asked him to select one among that 20 :).
ohhh thatz so sweet man….in fact her list is very short and her wish list is so simple. if i have know her, i would have helped her to prepare a better list lol 😛
remember ajith, atleast U have to do this small thing for your sister 🙂 ….(goodness U don’t know my sister 🙂 )
OG: ROFL….. at helping her prepare a better list….. hahahahahaha, da da …para vekkallae machu 😛

My husband will not go shopping unless he has no option. You guys don’t know what you are missing – the joys and power of retail therapy 🙂
OG: I cannot stand shopping…. and I do it only when absolutely necessary……. 😛 retail therapy…. LOL…. I dont see any joy in it 😛

u know what.. when it comes to bros.. sis like anything they buy for them coz they know its the feeling that is more imp.. not the wrong shade of makeup or oversized shades.. LOL.. 😀
OG: thanku 😛 yes, the feeling is important 😛 I sure hope so 😛

    • June 14, 2009 3:45 pm

I am not that kind of sister. 😦 I tell my brother to not bother and give me money and be happy. 😀 Of course he is happy too that way.
OG: hahahahahahaha 😛 good policy 😛

  20. June 14, 2009 11:33 am

Poor you! Even I hate going shopping for my sis.. she never likes what I buy for her.. and ends up taking stuff that I buy for myself!
OG: hahaha 😛 poor you as well 😆

  21. June 14, 2009 3:42 pm

Ha..ha..ha..ha.. OG, you are gone case. Shopping for women is tough and I can tell you that being a woman myself. Our mood varies often. I guess your sister is way too young so she might happily accept whatever you buy for her. 😀
OG: yes, she is young….. so should like what I get her 😛
This reminds me of the time when my brother along with his friends went on a tour to Rajasthan and bought some jooties or gosh! it was horrendous. First I rarely wear flats. I am more of heels and high heels and second I would have loved if those were according to my taste but naah! I kept it not to hurt his feelings but he knew it. He still tells me how much money he wasted on them. I tell him now that give me money, I will shop for myself. 😆
OG: hahahahaha, brothers….. 😉 what can I say 😛 ha ha ha 😛
Another incident is my cousin’s who was in Russia and wanted to send me a make-up set so he went and asked the Russian woman at the store to select the lipstick that suits her face. Now this woman who looks like Apple-Cherry-Orange chose a bright color which almost no Indian skin can carry. I was shocked beyond belief to see that color. 😆
OG:LOL!!!!!!!!! I have never bought lippu sticku for anyone so far
    These boys! Ufff…….
    OG: LOL!!! yeah, these boys…….shesh
Now coming back to your dilemma,

1.A sunglass to protect herself against the Chennai summer, not big but not too small either.

Big ones are in fashion now but then it also depends on her age and face shape. It is easy to select a sunglass if you just go for a good one. Check out at sunglass hut.
OG: OKay, will do that…….. I know of one sunglass hut near my house…..
2.A college bag which should look small but should have the holding capacity of an Ashok Leyland truck.

You can get her a ladies backpack. It is really fun and girly.
    OG: okay…… done….
3.A makeup kit with all the stuff girls use.

I would actually ask her to shop for make-up in India because she will find things of her choice according to the weather she lives in. I don’t think the make-up from here is a good idea for Chennai weather. I always use Indian face products in India.

You can buy a Loreal eyeliner and lipstick for her. (Ask her for the color though)
    OG: okay…. point noted……

    4.Perfume and the works.

This is the easiest if she has a brand. If not then get any mild one. Most women perfumes are mild.
OG: i dont think she has a brand… have to ask :P…. LOL mild ones….. yes again point noted 😛

    Two things
1)you dont like flowers.. so there go your chances of getting half the girls..
2)you dont like shopping..no rr you are ALLERGIC to shopping..so there go your chances to get the remaining girls
So I am crying for the fate that is about to befall you …..
OG: LMAO!!!!!!!! the fate has already befallen me 😛 LOL…. you are right… maybe I need to change my tactics 😛 LOL

Also, I agree with Solilo that buying makeup in India is better. There are not many brands here that suit our warm indian skin. THey are either too light or too dark 😦

Try to enjoy the shopping experience OG!
    OG: hmm…. okay… I will not buy makeup from here……… 😛 thanks a lot!
