Nadodikattu – IV : The Great Egg-scapade

January 13, 2009

We got bold today. Maybe it was because, our stomachs had been growling for some time, but nevertheless, we got bold today.
My friend Mr. FR and I, we decided to make a couple of Bull’s Eyes for dinner (with bread) as it was cold outside and neither of us wanted to step out of the warm room.As for me, I have never been near anything related to the kitchen till now, except to make some Tea/Coffee and by what Mr. FR told me, he was an expert in making eggs in any form.
It started out relatively well. FR with all his flair and charisma, placed the pan on the stove and as an added precaution, doled in a couple of teaspoons of oil for good measure. He did all this with a lazy confidence while he was humming sotto voce to himself. With any step he took, he did manage to follow it up with a smile, a patronizing smile; as if to tell me:
“Well Alavalaadhi (useless), this is how you do it”.
With a careless ease that comes natural to a 6 foot 3 inch lanky frame, he went about his stuff like Manfred Von Richtofen when he went on his morning after – breakfast missions….
I was made to sit there beside him and hand him over anything that he required from time to time like the spoon, oil, onions, salt, eggs, pepper etc.
I was pretty disinterested in the whole process and I was watching TV when I should have watched his cooking.
So thus, Mr. FR, the chef started cooking and Ajit, the helper hardly helped!!!
Pretty soon, the often glib Mr. FR stopped talking and from where I sat, I could see the intense concentration on his face and I could also see the tiny drops of sweat form on his brow but I did not say anything.
After a few minutes of hard work, The Great Chef FR looks at me with a sheepish silly grin, and asks me to come over. Although, I had an inkling on what to expect; the very sight of the eggs made me laugh so much that I started crying and my sides started hurting…….
The look on his face was more scrambled than the eggs were…………… and his expression was priceless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t know as to what went in, but what came out definitely looked like a mangled carcass of some creature!!!

I found the whole thing so damn funny; kind of reminded me of “The Harris Cooking Incident” in “Three Men in a Boat”.

FR as usual put the blame squarely on the non “non sticky frying pan” but I did not have the heart to tell him that it was his cooking that had to take the blame….

Maybe I could have named this article as:
1. The curious case of the non non sticky frying pan.
2. A stickler for non sticky pans.
or Maybe you could tell me…….
Well, ladies and gentlemen, that is how we bachelors live and learn!!!
And what does not kill us only makes us stronger!!!!

Ha! Ha! Alavalaadi?! Haven’t heard that term in a long time.

About time Nadodikattu changes to Akkare, Akkare, Akkare.

    rotfl :))))
The moment I saw the picture I thought “Not using a non-stick pan to fry eggs!” .. So I assure you even experienced chefs will find it’s better to fry in a non stick pan or at least a wrought iron pan.

This was really funny … the tragedy of the a ruined breakfast brought back many memories of similar fiascoes 🙂
