Nadodikattu – III : What we beg for!!

January 12, 2009

In India, we find people begging for money so that they can fill their stomach but in America, you find that people beg so that they can get money to fill their car with petrol!!

(Photo Taken by this ordinary guy/She did not see me, so don’t worry/Don’t call that number in red LOL)
Last week, in the petrol pump, a gentleman (dressed pretty well) came up to me and very eloquently asked me for a dollar for petrol and I gave him that because he was so glib.
This is how poor the poor are. People here, have the government to take care of them for basic human needs……
Everything is relative, isn’t it……?
Maybe this is how “Being Poor in America” is defined as…..

Every time I see this title ‘Nadodikattu’ in IHM’s blog roll, reminds me of Mohanlal-Srinivasan buying a cow and dreaming of becoming rich. Ha! Ha! hilarious that film was.

Coming back to your post, couple of times I have seen guys begging for Beer and cigs. At least gas is better.

Yes, here in UK, we have people asking for ‘change’. ‘Hey mate, change to spare?’ Once a kid came and asked my husband for cigarettes, and when he refuesd – he actually gave him the finger! Beggars with attitude!!!!!

    hey Solilo,

I will also never forget the film, especially, the line:
    “ellathinum samayam undu, dasa”
“I am pavanai, the serial killer”

yeah, begging for petrol is not that bad 🙂

good one, First time I am hearing this…. 🙂

    Everything is relative…
As per latest reports, there are more obese people in the world than malnutritiond ones…..
I also took care to ensure she did not see me, otherwise she/I would have felt bad…
So I took this while waiting at signal using “Ultra Zoom” (what ever that means) …… 🙂

    yeah Smitha,
    Beggars with attitude!!!!!
we find them in India as well 🙂

    Vinod Sir,
hahahahaha, but first they will have to raise the visa money 🙂

There are lazy people all over the world but the interesting thing is that even though the govt has ensured that basic needs are taken care of, it has not resulted in a lazy culture. In fact the American culture is the most competitive and people are always striving to achieve more.

The American poverty line is for people having an annual income of less than 10,000 dollars . From what I remember .
