Varuna, Poseidon and Njord: I invoke you

December 31, 2008

Dear Varuna, Poseidon and Njord,

We Humans are indeed an interesting race. We generally are impervious to impending disaster as long as we are not aware of it and we are also impervious to disaster as long as it is gradual.

Today, as the situation stands, we need your help and your blessing more than Allah, Krishna and Jesus because of this impending disaster.

Oh Poseidon, I know the respect and fear that people have when they talk about you. Old stories say that when you are happy, you have managed to create new islands, stop storms, calm the seven seas and given safe passage to countless voyagers around the globe and the old stories also say that you have a short fuse and that when you are angry, you have created havoc all around which includes Chindi kaams like sending huge sea monsters to pester us!!

Oh, Varuna, I know that you had helped Rama cross over to Ceylon long back, much before the BandraWorli Sea link was ever conceptualized and that you have granted immortality to many people. We also know of the incident where you had a major tiff with Indra when Arjuna tried killing Takshaka and gave him the Gandhiva!!

Oh, Njord, I do not know much about you, except for the fact that you had an unhealthy childhood and a disastrous marriage but being a Nordic Gods, I suspect that you are also as temperamental as they come!!

The main reason why I am invoking you guys is because all of you are temperamental and because your EQ seems to be pretty high!!
I know that there are many water and ocean gods around the world but I seek your blessing specifically, because we are in a mess today and I believe that the buck stops with you guys when it comes to matters of the heart.

Many reports predict that we Mortal Earthlings are going to be in a soup (a dry one) very soon, maybe as soon as 40 years time. According to these reports, the Himalayan glaciers could disappear which in turn means that the Ganges, Indus, Brahmaputra, Yangtze, Mekong, Salween and Yellow rivers could dry up which in turn means that around 2.4 billion people could be affected.

I know that in India now, thousands do not have access to drinkable water and that we Indians still do not see the impending water wars……
So please whirl your wands or do anything, but please educate the government and the common man on this and help us build more Desalinization plants all over. The Israelis do it pretty regularly (even without having a water God) and if they can, then it means that we can as well.

Respectfully yours,

Ajit

PS: Other Water Gods: Please don’t get offended coz pretty soon, I will be asking favors from you as well…………………

Nicely done! I think there is a big de-salinisation plant coming up in Chennai. Not just Israel, I think all the sun-n-sand Arab kingdoms in the Persian Gulf are thriving because of such plants. As of now, de-salinisation, mostly by reverse osmosis, is a costly affair. But, if the water Gods don’t listen to you, we may soon find Reliance Water Pumps alongside its petrol pumps. Some of us may then choose to walk an extra mile, to be able to buy water to fuel us rather than petrol to fuel for our cars!

delete “for” in the last line, or learn to live with such typographical errors from someone who has never typed in his life!

and typos…. I make them all the time 😛
not because of typo issues but due to basic grammer ones…..

Spot on. It is predicted that the next war is going to be on or for water. Desalination is one part. When Chennai was under drought conditions a few years ago, they had made rain water harvesting a must in all housing complexes. One sees the signs everywhere, but the system is clogged up and no body seems to care as we have good rains for the past few years. We can be so callous with the most important ingredient for living, as you rightly say, “We Humans are indeed an interesting race. We generally are impervious to impending disaster as long as we are not aware of it and we are also impervious to disaster as long as it is gradual”.

First Enlighten Me, now My Daily Morphine 🙂
… I never come up with these witty ones 😦

I received an email forward with a Power Point Presentation created by President Kalam (Or so it claimed, I doubt it but it was good) – it is scary, about how people are using some chemical lotions to clean themselves because there isn’t enough water, and everyone has rationed amounts of water and dehydrated skin…

and your post reminded me of that !!!

But here’s wishing you a very happy New Year – May you find yourself sticking to all the resolutions you make and may you have a great 2009 🙂
I leave with Auld Lang Syne!

    Thanks Indyeah,
we really need to do something about this situation, hence the post

    JPJ,
India will suffer if it does not take care of the present…. as anyways our water demands are expected to increase in the coming years just like our population…

    IHM,
    That was a beautiful song….

Ok , so thats for the governments to do, but we ordinary mortals are doing to preserve this orecious thing, washing cars with pipe everyday….wahing terraces, gardening the plants with drinking water, running the tap while shaving, brushing and then the maids..they are the limit, using a huge amount for a very small thing……why not start from a lower label.

It is quite scray isn’t it? I agree with Renu that while all this is for the Govt to do, we all can contribute in our own small ways to conserve and reduce waste of water.
